How To Recover High Back Dining Chairs

How To Recover High Back Dining Chairs

My favorite pieces to paint are vintage and antique furniture.  The details, scrolls, and craftsmanship are almost unmatched in modern day pieces.  There's just something so satisfying about taking a neglected dresser, table, or chair that was loved decades ago and transforming it into a beautiful, usable piece again.

Can I get an amen?

But sometimes, you come across a challenge that is different than your "usual" type of project.

Like these Parsons chairs.  If you had an opportunity to do something with these, what would you do?

These are the dining chairs my family used for ten years – ever since my husband and I got married and bought our first house – until we finally got a brand new set.  They're very well used and I honestly considered just donating them to Goodwill because I didn't want to mess with them.

They're basic leathery Parsons chairs, with nothing special about them – quite different than the pieces I usually decide to redo.  However I'm not one to turn down a challenge, so off to Hobby Lobby I went and found some gorgeous new script fabric to reupholster these babies.

First things first, everything has to come apart…(Warning: There are tons of photos because I wanted to be thorough for you guys!)

When you're attempting this kind of project – one that you'll have to put back together in a very specific way – take photos along the way so you can refer back later.

Also, put all the screws, bolts, and washers in a sandwich bag so they don't get lost (you might want to label them if there are different sizes and you tend to be forgetful).

Next, remove all of the staples from the upholstery.  You can use a staple remover, but I used a thin flathead screwdriver and needle nose pliers. Update: Now I own this inexpensive staple remover which speeds things up and doesn't hurt my hands.

If you're working on a Parsons chair like this one, when you take it all apart the back will look like this:

Gently remove the leather – you may need to use it as a pattern for the new fabric.

Thankfully all the padding was still in excellent condition.

Lay the new fabric over the back and cut off the excess – leave extra though "just in case."  You can always cut more off later.

Then flip the fabric with the printed side facing inward and wrap it around the chair back.

Make sure the pattern is straight and pin around the edges.

If your pattern looks the same from any angle, you can choose to use it lengthwise over the chair instead so you wouldn't have a seam at the top.  However, since I chose a script design, I had to do it this way or the script would be upside down on the back.

Think of it almost like you're making a pillowcase.

Slide your fabric off over the top and then sew along the pinned lines.

Try it on for size and then make adjustments as necessary.

When I knew the size was right, I went back and stitched along the lines again and then cut off the excess fabric.  I also ironed it again since this time it would be going on the chair permanently.

Cut, fold, and staple using the original fabric as an example.

For the seat, lay out and cut the fabric – leaving enough to fold it underneath when stapling.

Every time I remove old upholstery and staples I get an injury.  🙁

Also, I started stapling the seat and then my stapler got jammed and apparently I broke it while trying to fix it.  (I don't believe there's any such thing as a completely drama-free project!)

Here's a look at the underside of one of the corners.  Those always seem to be a little tricky…

And this is Mr. GITG's heavy duty Dewalt staple gun (below) that I had to use after my cheapo one from Hobby Lobby broke.

After adjusting the settings it worked just fine, but definitely made my hands sore afterward!  He also has a pneumatic stapler that I need to try…

When the seat's all finished, the bottom should look something like this:

Use your hardware to put it all back together and then you'll have a perfectly (maybe imperfect, if it's like mine) pretty reupholstered dining chair.

Keep going until you have a full set of these lovelies and then it's time for a dinner party!

And the script fabric.  I fell in love with it and planned on redoing two Parsons chairs for today (and possibly all 4 of them), plus I had a coupon, so I bought FOUR yards of it.  Holy cow that's a ton of fabric.

(By the way, this is duck cloth – the type of fabric I usually buy for reupholstering.)

I only finished one chair so far, because we took our two older boys out of town for a mini vacation.  And then I had those darn stapler problems.  But hey, here's a peek at our new dining set.  🙂

Whew, that was a lot of photos!  I hope you guys find them useful and feel confident now to tackle this kind of project yourself.  The most important advice is to use the original fabric as a pattern and take photos while you're taking the chair apart so you'll know exactly what to do and how to put it back together.

And who knows, maybe you'll be inspired to redo a piece of furniture that's not your "usual" style and you'd almost rather just donate it to Goodwill.  Take a chance and see what comes of it!

So tell me – what's your "usual" type of makeover?  Do you have a favorite style or type of furniture?  I'd love to know!  – Jen

P.S.  Did you guys notice that I did an entire furniture makeover with no paint?!  😉

Outdoor Furniture Ideas to Makeover Your Space

Beautiful wooden terrace with garden furniture surrounded by greenery on a warm, summer day

For Napping

Take your naps outdoors. Spring for a cozy hanging chair or porch swing. They're so comfortable, people won't notice they're dozing off. Hammocks are also a great place to take a nap and come in different options such as ergonomic hammocks or extra wide.

Lounge for hours on an outdoor sofa. They are just as great as indoor sofas for a nap. You can purchase them online and they're easy to set up. Don't forget to add pillows to any piece for extra comfort.

For Eating

You can have more than a picnic table outside. On your dining set, place centerpieces filled with all sorts of snacks like chopped veggies, popcorn, chips, or candy. Instead of the typical plant centerpiece, the snack centerpieces will pop out. The centerpieces can also be jars of pickled vegetables.

Set up a s'mores bar near the fire-pit by having jars of graham crackers, marshmallows, chocolate and a chic display of sticks ready.

Now you can have breakfast, lunch, or dinner in the great outdoors.

For Parties

There's more to outdoor furniture than just a set of chairs and a table. Backyards can be a great area to make an outdoor living room. Create a movie theater with a projector outside. When guests are over, make sure to put together and provide extra comfortable seating such as a sofa or blankets and pillows on the ground. For seating, you can also place pallets on the ground and cover them with cushions. Project the movie on the side of your house or a set up a screen.

Make transporting drinks, bottles, and glasses easier with a bar cart. Now the drinks are portable. Would you rather have the refreshments remain in one place? Tables these days can incorporate a cooler below or in the middle. Now you can have two pieces of furniture in one. Get these cooler tables at a store or you can build one yourself.

Fire pits can be built by hand, bought online or at the home and garden section of stores. Some fire pits can be transformed into a table if you're running out of space. They are a perfect attraction for light, warmth, and s'mores. Have weatherproof chairs surround the firepit or place them near the firepit.

One last thing you could add to your backyard is a dog pool. Imagine how fun it would be to have a dog party.

For A Personal Getaway

This is for people who want to make their space a little more private or a place to recharge. People usually build privacy walls to avoid being seen. Privacy walls can be sheer shades, a divider made of wooden planks, or a trellis netting with vines or another green plant. These products help promote quiet time and coziness.

Bring the garden onto your porch or balcony. Make a relaxing and natural atmosphere with plants, water, and rocks.

Turn a small or large shelf into an outdoor library or a spot to make room for your other activities (scrapbooking, listening to a music collection, drawing, etc). Add a door to the shelf to help protect the materials from the weather and animals. This can be a do-it-yourself project or you can get them at flea markets.

Beds come in all shapes and sizes. You can add one to the corner of a balcony, patio or in the middle of the backyard. Use the bed to curl up with a book or for your other hobbies. You can also add a canopy for protection from the weather and sun. If there's more space include a small coffee table and rug for a homey touch.

  • If you are creating an outdoor dining area as part of a bigger garden overhaul, find out how to design a garden.

1. Choose beautiful, but practical outdoor flooring

An outdoor dining area will need flooring that can support lots of furniture and your barbecue, so choose a practical, durable surface that is hard (to prevent your furniture sinking into the ground), and even and smooth (to prevent accidents). Ideally, your outdoor flooring will mimic that of the flooring indoors in style, colour and finish for that perfect indoor-outdoor blend: decking is a great option if you have wooden kitchen flooring, but look at paving options if you have floor tiles.

Find out how to design the best garden deck in our guide.

2. Keep everything tidy with ample storage

Ikea outdoor

Every garden needs some good outdoor storage, but especially a garden that doubles up as a dining space or outdoor kitchen. If your outdoor dining area is covered, you can keep all your utensils and table linens clean and tidy in kitchen trolley, boxes, and crates outside; otherwise, make space with clever shed storage.

We have plenty more space saving garden storage ideas.

A selection of outdoor storage options is available at Ikea.

3. Create an atmosphere with an outdoor speaker

Music makes any dinner party better, so why not have it on when dining outdoors, too? You can, of course, simply have sound coming from the indoors, but for convenience's sake (think changing a song quickly or controlling volume), invest in an outdoor speaker.

The Aglow Bluetooth Outdoor Speaker from Kreafunk is waterproof and doubles up as an LED lantern. Available at Cuckooland.

4. Up the comfort level with an outdoor rug

Making outdoor dining as comfortable as its indoor equivalent is all about investing into extra details, especially where it comes to soft furnishings. Sumptuous seat padding is a must, but to take your al fresco dining to a whole new level, lay an outdoor rug underneath your dining set.

The San Juan Outdoor Rug by Fab Hab is waterproof and reversible – and visually striking. Available at Cuckooland.

5. Make your table inviting with crisp table linen

Eden outdoor dining set

One of the pleasures of indoor dining is crisp and fresh table linen – so why not have the same level of detail outdoors? Choose natural, luxurious fabrics such as cotton and linen for a slightly rustic, cosy look and feel, but go for natural finishes and colours, as they won't fade as obviously as bright colours.

In this outdoor dining space, The Eden Outdoor Dining set has been covered with cotton and linen table linen from John Lewis.

6. Take not just dining, but also cooking, outside

Ikea outdoor

If your kitchen is not right next to your garden dining area, transporting heavy dishes between the inside and outside may be a challenge (especially if you are cooking for a large group). So, why not have a little kitchen dedicated to al fresco cooking right where you will be having dinner? Add a few plant pots, including herbs, and you have a self-sufficient outdoor dining area complete with a mini kitchen garden.

7. Create an intimate arbour space with plants and lights

Al fresco dining cannot be beaten for enjoying the sunshine and open air – but what about when it gets too hot, especially during lunchtime, or at night when you might need a little more shelter? Create a natural roof by training climber plants, such as ivy or a vine to form an arbour. Then accessorise with pretty festoon garden lights and enjoy outdoor dining without overheating.

Find out how to plan your garden lighting.

8. Embrace the shade with a parasol

Ikea outdoor dining

Outdoor dining means being at the mercy of changeable weather, from strong sun to an unexpected shower. To keep everyone comfortably cool – or protected from rain – choose a dining set with a parasol, or add a freestanding or clip-on version to your existing dining ensemble. This option is especially useful for exposed outdoor areas and terraces.

9. Take a unique approach to your outdoor space

Adding your personality to your alfresco dining set up is a must. Whether you're into modern looks or shabby chic everything, remember that adding your own favourite pieces into your design scheme will make all the difference. We love this boho look, to create your own, invest in a beautiful metal outdoor dining set and then accessorise with favourite lamps, cushions, and lights. 10. Choose stacking outdoor dining chairs to save space

If your garden or terrace is on the small side, and you are planning on entertaining after dinner, you will want to pick the best garden chairs that are either easily folded or stacked away.
